This was the job that introduced me to the Bridgend Community Farmhouse near Cameron toll in Edinburgh.

The building we had to clad was the workshop complex which we were cladding using the Japanese burning technique. We had to tie 3 planks of larch together and place it over a fire to char the inside of the chimney we created.

We then had to turn the wood to 180 degrees to burn the other side. It was then taken apart, damped down with water and left to cool. Once it was cooled down we had cut the planks to length, attached them to the building and gave the planks a final finish to clear some of the burnt surface away.

The advantage of this technique is it was natural and will ensure the outside of the building cannot catch fire readily.
